Mt Elgon National Park

Mt Elgon is a volcanic mountain and it stands astride the Uganda- Kenya Border. It rises to more than 4000 metres above sea level. It is the largest volcanic base in the world, hence referred to as: The worlds’ largest Caldera. The indigenous people the Bagisu call it Mt. Masaba.

This is because they consider Mount Elgon to be the picture of their founding father Masaba. Locally, the Bagisu are called Bamasaba and their local dialect is Lumasaba. Mt. Elgon conservation area is a declared UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve. In recognition of its water catchment, cultural, biological and historical values; it was gazetted as a National Park in 1993.
