Semuliki National Park

Semuliki National Park is located in Bwamba County, in Bundibugyo District, in Western Uganda. It was established in October 1993. Its area is 219 km2 of the only lowland tropical rainforest. It is one of the richest areas of floral and faunal biodiversity in Africa, with bird and butterfly species being especially diverse. It’s commonly referred to as the Birders Haven.

Semuliki National Park (SNP) in Bundibugyo District; in Western Uganda, has a pair of Hot Springs. One is male and the other female. The female one is called Nyansimbi, which means the female ancestors. The male one is called Bintente. They are located in Sempaya area and, together they are called Sempaya Hot springs.

Bintente hot spring is bigger than Nyansimbi. When you are here, you can see a broad steaming pool, of about 12 metres in diameter. This spring is located in swampy clearing enclosed by Ituri forest with a striking Mt. Rwenzori (called Rwenjura in the local dialect) back drop of Balango ridge.

Nyansimbi hot spring is a boiling Geyser which spurts very hot water, bubbles and steam up to about two metres high. Tourists can boil eggs or banana fingers in the hot pools of hot water that surround Nyansimbi Central spout.

Sempaya Hot springs are the most outstanding tourist attraction in Semuliki National Park. Witnessing them is an experience of a life time fit for every tourist coming to Uganda – the Pearl of Africa. These Hot Springs demonstrate the powerful tectonic forces including volcanicity that have been shaping both arms (Eastern and western) of the Rift Valley for the last 14 million years.
